6th GENERATION – 2015-
"Mustang is a car that's known throughout the world. We have a large fan base – most of which is here in the U.S. – but a significant amount is also overseas. About half of the Mustang clubs are located overseas. This is really the first opportunity we've had to bring a Mustang global. So we're going to produce both a left-hand and a right-hand driver option. We know that it's a car that customers around the world are really looking forward to.
"The new 2015 Mustang will have three engine options: a 3.7-liter V6 which will be our entry engine, which is similar to what we use today; we've added a 2.3-liter EcoBoost to the line-up, which will provide more power and better fuel efficiency; and then we're also adding some improvements to the 5.0-liter V8 to give it more horsepower and more torque and better efficiency. It will have a new intake manifold and new cylinder heads to increase its breathability. So we've done a lot of work to try and upgrade the engines.
"We've tried to incorporate a lot of the historical designs yet do so in a modern way. Many of the traditional characteristics remain – the long hood, short rear deck-lid – and given it a real fastback profile. The body is wider and sits lower than the outgoing model. The designers have done a good job of keeping those historical cues, but doing so in a way that represents a modern, sleek profile.
"One thing Mustang is known for is it's a very customizable car, and we've maintained a great number of options for the customer. You're able to keep it affordable on the low end and option up as you like. We have several different interiors, several different wheel combinations – we're adding a 20-inch wheel for the first time, which is something our customers have been asking for. We still maintain several performance features as well. You're still going to be able to order Recaro Seats, you can upgrade from a standard stereo into a Shaker Pro stereo.
"We have an all-new suspension, both front and rear, which is really going to aid in the handling of this car versus the outgoing model. We're adding an Integral Link IRS rear suspension for the first time. In addition to that we're adding the MacPherson Double-ball-joint front suspension. And this new suspension system has allowed us to package bigger brakes, so we'll have three levels of braking systems. In the GT it will have the standard 4-piston caliper, which in the past were usually reserved for upgrade packages. In our new performance package we're offering a fixed 6-piston caliper to the car, which is the first time that we've been able to do that.
"One feature we've added as a result of customer input is a memory recline feature to the driver's seat. So if you were to let someone into the back seat and you move the driver's seat, when you put it back it returns to the same position that you had it before.
"Am I going to get one? Absolutely. I can't wait. The hardest part is trying to decide how you want to order it. As I said, there are a great number of options, so making sure you pick the right one becomes the toughest part.”
